The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training provides support to Queensland small businesses to help them start, grow and prosper.

Running a small business can be rewarding, but it is important to consider opportunities and challenges before starting. Here are a few of our programs to help start-ups and early-stage businesses.

Mentor chats

Mentor chats are designed for early stage businesses, offering a 45–60 minute session with 2–3 mentors to help with any initial challenges.

Small Business Entrepreneur Grants

The Small Business Entrepreneur Grants Program provides new small businesses access to professional advice and support with up to $5,000 in matched funding.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work

Queensland small businesses can employ qualified and skilled staff through Skilling Queenslanders for Work with a one-off $10,000 payment available to eligible employers. Payments of up to $20,000 may also be available to employ people aged 15–24 years old.

Back to Work

The Back to Work program offers support payments of up to $20,000 and $15,000 for eligible businesses to employ eligible jobseekers in regional and South East Queensland. Regions include:

  • Wide Bay Burnett
  • North Queensland
  • Far North Queensland
  • Mackay/Whitsunday
  • Central Queensland
  • North West Queensland
  • South West Queensland.

Recruiting school leavers

Free TAFE allows small businesses to hire Year 12 graduates within 1 year of leaving school who have access to free TAFE courses in priority industries.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

The Certificate 3 Guarantee program subsidises the training cost for eligible employees to undertake their first post-school Certificate III qualification.

Higher Level Skills

The Higher Level Skills program gives small businesses the opportunity to engage eligible employees in priority training in selected Certificate IV or higher qualifications.

Trade Skills Assessment and Gap Training

The Trade Skills Assessment and Gap Training program allows eligible employees with substantial industry experience in a priority trade area to have their skills recognised to achieve a qualification.

Mentoring for Growth

With more than 500 active mentors across Queensland from a range of industries, Mentoring for Growth offers businesses a 90-minute face-to-face panel with up to 6 mentors focused on growing your business.

Small Business Digital Grants

The Small Business Digital Grants Program assists eligible small businesses to access digital technologies and services with matched funding up to $10,000.

Business Growth Fund

The Business Growth Fund Program helps businesses purchase and implement highly specialised equipment or services through co-contribution grants up to $50,000.

Advancing Women in Business

The Advancing Women in Business initiative encourages more women to start and grow their own business through programs, grants, networking events, mentoring, partnerships and education.

Advancing Indigenous Business

The Advancing Indigenous Business initiative offers support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business owners and entrepreneurs in their business development, growth and continued success.
