Age requirements

Individuals who are 13 years of age or older may be eligible to undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship in most occupations. However, there are some apprenticeships and traineeships in occupations that have a higher entry age requirement due to specific legislation related to that industry.

Information regarding the age requirement for individual apprenticeships and traineeships can be obtained from the Queensland Information Training Service (QTIS) website.

Where the apprentice or trainee is under 18 years of age at the date of signing the training contract, the signed consent of a parent or guardian is required, where appropriate.

The ultimate responsibility for compliance with age requirements that exist and are enforceable under Queensland legislation rests with employers.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

Restricted callings

Restrictions apply to the rights of employers to employ staff under the age of 18 years to certain jobs, or 'callings'. Employers may not employ a person under the age of 18 years of age that appear in the list of restricted callings, unless the prospective employee:

  • has completed a qualification or statement of attainment relevant to the calling; or
  • is employed by the employer as an apprentice or trainee in the calling under a registered training contract.

Citizenship, residency and visa information

As a general rule only Australian citizens, and New Zealand citizens who have entered Australia on a valid passport, have unrestricted rights to employment in Australia.

Any other person wanting to work in Australia must have a visa allowing employment. Visa holders may engage in apprenticeships and traineeships provided their work rights allow this, based on advice provided by the Department of Home Affairs.

Employers have a legal responsibility relating to the residency eligibility for employment and foreign nationals.
