About the Commissioner

Mr John (JC) Collins AM, bassist for Brisbane band Powderfinger and a well-known contributor to the night-life sector, has been appointed as the Commissioner for a three-year term commencing from 30 September 2024.

Mr Collins will be working with live music venues, nightclubs, festival organisers, bars and restaurants, entertainment precincts, arts outlets, and local pubs across Queensland to boost the night economy, which generates millions of dollars.

The Commissioner provides a central point of contact for the night-life economy sector, advocating on behalf of night-life businesses and to government, and working collaboratively across Queensland and interjurisdictionally to enhance conditions for Queensland's night-life businesses.

The Commissioner will develop and assist partnerships to encourage growth and sustainability of the thousands of local businesses driving the industry and promoting and strengthening opportunities for more established venues and events.

A stakeholder reference group will be convened in the coming months to support the Commissioner, and ensure a diversity of voices, needs and insights are captured as he focuses on growing opportunities for the night-life sector while ensuring safety remains a priority.

The role of Queensland's Night Life Economy Commissioner was created in legislation on 23 August 2024 and provides for the appointment of the Commissioner to work with night-life economy businesses and support, promote and advocate for key aspects of the night life economy.
