The Back to Work program has really given me the confidence to be able to go out and speak to people and pass on what I've learnt to other, to other people and I never thought I'd be able to do that.

The Back to Work program has changed the lives of people like Anthony, Nathan and Michael. Some of the situations that they found themselves in were quite dire.

All of those guys now walk in here with their chin held high. They do a fantastic job and we’re really, really pleased to give those guys a chance.

I love working at Gunabul. The opportunity to learn the various aspects of what actually goes into a golf course. I mean, I've played on them enough times, and now I'm seeing that from behind the scenes, and that's even better.

Having a job here at Gunabul has been amazing. It's been able to get me back to work. I've learnt a lot of new skills that I didn't have before. My communication skills have become better. I've learnt so much since, since working here.

We thank the Queensland Government for this initiative. It's essential to be able to take away any barriers that people living with a disability face in getting employment and meaningful employment.

Julie Marsh, Chief Executive Officer of Wellness Australia Group, credits the Back to Work program as instrumental in transforming Gunabul Homestead, Wellness AU's sister property, into a thriving hub of inclusive employment, community engagement, and personal growth.

"Without the support of the Back to Work program, Gunabul Homestead wouldn't be the success it is today," Julie says.

Gunabul Homestead reflects Wellness AU's commitment to creating inclusive, purpose-driven workplaces. Fully accessible and designed to support people of all abilities, the property features a golf course tailored for inclusive play, accessible accommodation, a café and bar, retail pro shop, and flexible event spaces. It also serves as a launchpad for skills development, providing supported training, work experience and pathways into meaningful employment.

Through a strong partnership between Gunabul Homestead and Wellness AU, over 10 diverse roles are offered in areas like hospitality, groundskeeping, customer service, and events. Staff are supported through volunteering and training programs that allow them to trial different positions before stepping into permanent roles—ensuring a good match between each employee's strengths, interests, and long-term goals.

Thanks to support from the Back to Work program, Wellness AU has helped individuals like Nathan, Michael and Anthony overcome significant employment barriers and build fulfilling careers.

Nathan, who began his journey as a trainee, has now received 3 internal promotions and leads as Head Greenskeeper, ensuring the golf course remains in top condition.

Michael discovered his passion for customer service and now thrives part-time in the pro shop. He's also preparing to train as a Support Worker, with ambitions to support others on their own employment journeys.

Anthony, a Special Olympics golfer, connected with Wellness AU during a time of homelessness. Gunabul Homestead provided immediate accommodation, meals, and training support. With structure and encouragement, Anthony gained his Food Safety Certificate and Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate, and has now been offered a full-time role with Gunabul.

Julie emphasises the profound impact of these opportunities:

"The Back to Work Program has been life-changing for Anthony, Nathan, and Michael. People with disability make fantastic employees—it's simply about investing time, offering clear guidance and support, and building confidence, just as you would with anyone starting a new role."

Through the Back to Work program, Gunabul Homestead was able to provide the tailored training and support that helped transform these lives.

"These success stories are proof that with the right support, people can thrive in meaningful, purposeful employment," Julie says. "They're not only excelling in their roles, but they're proud, committed members of the team. This program has been an incredible support for both them and for us."
