Lillianne Lenoy’s remarkable journey from high school student to full-time Physiotherapy Assistant has been recognised, with the proud South Sea Islander and Torres Strait Islander woman named Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year for North Queensland at the 2025 Queensland Training Awards.
A graduate of the Deadly Start Education2Employment program, 17-year-old Lillianne completed her Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance through Connect ‘n’ Grow while working at the Townsville University Hospital.
A pivotal moment in Lillianne’s training came during a visit to the renal unit, where she noticed that all the patients were First Nations people. This experience made her realise the urgent need for increased education and awareness about health challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Lillianne’s cultural identity is central to her work and motivation. Now working full-time in the Physiotherapy Unit, Lillianne is a passionate advocate for better Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes and serves as a role model for other young people.
“As a member of my community, I feel strong, but we also care about how others perceive us. I’ll always stand up for my people,” she said.
Lillianne’s story is one of resilience, cultural strength, and dedication, a shining example of the power of vocational education to build stronger futures and stronger communities. “I want to have a voice and be the change. I want to be a role model and help other kids,” Lillianne said.
“Growing up, there was a feeling of shame surrounding opportunities. However, I witnessed firsthand how my best friend became the first in their family to graduate. What seemed like a challenge at first ultimately became an inspiring story for me.” She now encourages others to dream big.
“You have to be consistent and know that you can always be better,” she said. “If you put in the hard work, the possibilities are endless.”
