The electronic monitoring trial was introduced in May 2021 as part of a package of reforms aimed at giving courts the additional tools they need to keep the community safe.

Evaluation

The department conducted an evaluation of the trial after 12 months, with former police commissioner Bob Atkinson providing independent peer review of the report. The evaluation provided limited findings due to the small number of young people who were issued with a device during this period.

The report highlighted that electronic monitoring alone is not a single solution and other supports for young people and families are necessary to manage bail compliance and reduce reoffending.
