In Cairns and surrounding regions, young people are showing that with the right training and support, they can build strong futures and access meaningful careers.
Thanks to our Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative, local participants are gaining qualifications, stepping into trades, and laying the groundwork for long-term success.
Delivered by Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG), the WorkSkills@VPG (formerly known as RuralOps@VPG) projects support disadvantaged job seekers — many of them entering the workforce for the first time — by helping them build both technical skills and confidence.
Participants complete a Certificate III in Rural Operations, alongside practical training in high-demand areas such as forklift operation and civil construction machinery. They also receive wraparound support including case management, mentoring, employability skills training and industry site tours.
For two local teens, Elijah and Jordan, the experience has been life changing.
Elijah’s journey: from homeschooling to the workshop
At 16, Elijah was looking for connection and practical experience after being homeschooled.
By joining RuralOps@VPG, he began developing trade skills, while building confidence through weekly employability sessions. Recognising his keen interest in mechanics, VPG arranged a placement with Atherton Automotive, where he quickly impressed the team.
Elijah’s enthusiasm and potential paid off — he was offered an automotive apprenticeship, taking a major step forward in his career.
“What I’m most grateful for in the project is all the opportunities it’s given me and the people I’ve met along the way,” Elijah said.
Jordan’s breakthrough: from aspiration to apprenticeship
Jordan joined WorkSkills@VPG with a clear ambition, to start a career in the trades.
Jordan gain hands-on experience, completed his qualification, built essential employability skills, and explored career options through industry visits. A placement with Cold Frog Cairns, a local air conditioning and refrigeration business, became the turning point.
Impressing the Cold Frog Cairns team with his motivation and work ethic, Jordan was offered an apprenticeship after just one week.
Now thriving in his new role, Jordan enjoys the learning and camaraderie with his co-workers.
More than a program—a pathway to purpose
Elijah and Jordan are two of more than 60 jobseekers each year who find purpose and direction through VPG’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects.
Designed to meet the needs of local industry while supporting personal development, the projects combine accredited training with individualised support – ensuring participants aren’t just qualified but truly ready for work.
In regions like Cairns, where opportunities sometimes seem out of reach, these projects are helping change the story – one apprenticeship, one career, and one person at a time.
