Student voices are shaping Queensland's training sector
The Queensland Government is working to ensure we invest in the right training to support our future workforce and provide all Queenslanders with the skills they need.
As a vocational education and training (VET) student, your insights are key in shaping the future of our training sector. Sharing your experiences, goals and challenges can help government understand your training needs, improve future training experiences and inform funded training across Queensland.
Your voice is crucial in ensuring we get it right, so—through a series of surveys—we are seeking your feedback and insights at different stages of your training journey. By sharing your experiences, you can help us to:
- understand the training challenges you face and the support you and future students may need
- improve training programs and student support services
- ensure government investment in training meets the needs of Queensland students and the workforce.
The surveys will be your chance to tell us what the training sector is doing well and where it can be improved.
How are the surveys conducted
If you are a student undertaking Queensland Government-funded training, an invitation to participate in a survey will be emailed directly to you at specific points during and after your training. If you're under 18, we recommend discussing your participation with a parent or guardian before completing a survey.
When will I be contacted to participate in the survey
You'll be invited to participate in our surveys at specific points during and after your training journey:
- At enrolment – To share your initial insights about your training provider and your reasons for undertaking training.
- If your student record becomes inactive – To understand any changes in your circumstances that may be affecting your progress or if you have got what you needed from the training.
- At completion – To provide feedback on your experience and any changes in your status (e.g. employment) since enrolment.
- Post completion – Two years after completing your qualification, to share insights on how the training has impacted on your employment and career. This survey is administered by the Queensland Government Statistician's Office (QGSO).
- Targeted surveys – These will gather insights from specific groups of learners or locations.
You may also be invited to participate in the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) student outcomes survey, which gathers insights from VET students across Australia to help improve training programs.
Who can participate in the survey
The surveys will be sent to students undertaking Queensland Government-funded training. If you are under the age of 18, we recommend you discuss your participation with a parent or guardian before completing a survey.
Are my survey responses confidential
We won't ask you to provide any personal information in the survey. However, in the event that you do (e.g. in a free text field), your personal information will be handled in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2009.
Anonymous data from this survey may be shared with any government agency (including another department or statutory body) in the Queensland Government, or the government of any other state or territory in Australia, or a Australian Government department, agency or body.
What if I need help completing the survey
Contact our Customer Centre on 1300 369 935 or via email at training@desbt.qld.gov.au.
What kind of survey questions will be asked
Our survey questions focus on:
- your motivation for undertaking funded training
- any challenges or barriers you've faced in your training
- changes in your employment status or attitudes before, during or after your training
- if you have benefitted from your training, and its impact on your career.
Why have I just received the enrolment survey when I commenced training months ago
We send the enrolment survey out once your training provider has submitted or updated your enrolment information with the Queensland Government. Occasionally there can be delays in receiving this data, which may result in the enrolment survey being sent later than expected.
We still encourage you to complete the enrolment survey as your feedback about your initial motivations and experiences helps us to continuously improve Queensland's training system.
Why have I received an enrolment and completion survey at the same time
You may have received both the enrolment and completion surveys simultaneously because your training provider recently updated your records, indicating both your enrolment and the completion of your qualification. This can happen if there was a delay in submitting your enrolment details or if your training was completed in a shorter timeframe than usual.
We encourage you to complete both surveys as they capture insights at different stages of your training experience. The enrolment survey focuses on your initial motivations and expectations, while the completion survey gathers insights on your outcomes and overall experience. However, we recognise your time is valuable and if you can only complete one survey, please do the completion survey.
How will my survey responses be used
The information you provide will help us to:
- monitor and improve the performance of Queensland Government-funded training providers
- enhance student support services
- shape our annual investment in training and skills programs, including the Training Priorities Plan
- identify factors that contribute to student engagement and success.
What if I don't want to answer certain questions
Participation in the surveys in voluntary, and you can skip any questions you're not comfortable answering. However, we encourage you to provide as much feedback as possible to help us make meaningful improvements.
Will I see the results of the survey
Summaries of the data will be published annually by the department on this webpage. The survey findings will be used to administer the Skills Assure Supplier (SAS) program (i.e. the Queensland Government-funded training providers) and associated funding policies, and to monitor ongoing compliance and agreements with the department.
