In 2019, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed on a vision for vocational education and training (VET) to position the sector as responsive, dynamic and trusted. To deliver on this vision, COAG tasked Skills Council with developing a VET Reform Roadmap (the Roadmap).

Skills Council has asked senior officials in all jurisdictions to work together to develop a Roadmap for consideration by Ministers and endorsement by COAG by the middle of 2020.

Skills officials have developed a consultation draft of the Roadmap. This draft is a working document of the Skills Senior Officials' Network; it has not been reviewed or endorsed by governments or COAG.

Skills officials are now considering feedback provided on the consultation draft before providing a final version to Skills Council and COAG.

For general enquiries about the Roadmap, please contact VETReformRoadmap@dese.gov.au.

Micro-credentials in the VET system

To support the development of the COAG VET Reform Roadmap, Skills Ministers agreed to immediately fast track 4 pieces of foundational work. The first piece explores the use of micro-credentials in the national VET system to better respond to student and job-need.

This work will deliver:

  • an agreed definition of micro-credentials in the VET sector
  • an operational framework for how micro-credentials function in the national VET system.

This complements work being undertaken by the Australian Qualifications Framework following the Expert Review and on the higher education sector.

To support this work, a Micro-credentials discussion paper was prepared as the first part of the fast-tracked work on micro-credentials.
